Based in the Power Conversion Group at the University of Manchester, this post forms part of the EU Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative on Green Regional Aircraft. The University of Manchester is responsible for developing SABER simulation tools for use in the energy management of the aircraft electric drive systems. You will extend dynamic models of. electrical machines to include loss mechanisms and saturation effects, suitable for evaluating energy management in future civil aircraft, and work to identify machine parameters and measure machine losses using calorimetric methods. You will have an electrical engineering background and PhD or equivalent in a related discipline, or suitable industrial or research experience, in electrical machines or power conversion for aircraft. Role Purpose: The work entails a mix of engineering studies; preliminary and concept structure designs, preparation of functional specifications, due diligence assessment and technical support services, such as design checks and reviews, for international projects. Reporting to the Offshore Principal Structural Engineer, the main activities will include: - Conceptual design of offshore structures to support wind turbines and substations - Project planning and management for preliminary and front end engineering design studies - Preparation of technical documentation such as design basis, specifications and technical reports - Support to due diligence activities, structural revviewa and reporting for atructural aspects of offshore wind farms - Loading and structural analysis using in-house software, for which training will be provided - Design to contemporary offshore structural standards including GL, DNV, API and Eurocodes - Providing engineering inter-disciplinary input in support of other teams; in-house and external - Providing technical support to clients - Attendance at technical and project management meetings with clients and contractors - Potentially undertaking detailed design of offshore wind turbine and substation structures, including pile design - Liaison with other staff in design, reporting and the praparation of CAD drawings Person Specification: To be successful in this role, and our business, you will need to demonstrate the folllowing qualification, professional expertise and personal attributes: Technical/Professional Expertise: - Be qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in a civil or structural subject - Have a good knowledge of civil, structural or geotechnical design - Have a basic understanding of the key operational characteristics of wind turbines with respect to support structure design - Be able to understand, interpret and prepare technical reports - Have well developed IT skills, including advanced use of MS office applications and
